C53 Felipe Xicotencatl
The wreck of the C53 is part of a fleet of four ex-US Navy Minesweepers that were discharged and sold to the Mexican Navy, and then retired and intentionally sunk in 1999 throughout the Yucatan and Veracruz. At a length of 56m/154ft, the C53 is also know as “the Cozumel Wreck.” It serves an an artificial reef and is home to countless marine species. The ship sits perfectly upright in the sand and is often surrounded by stingrays on the bottom and Eagle rays midwater. On clear days, you can take spectacular pictures of the boat due to the excellent visibility that this site has mostly year round.
