The cenotes of the Rivera Maya near Playa del Carmen and Tulum are an incredible experience that all divers should go through at some point in their lives. They offer everything form snorkeling to freediving, from entry level scuba to some of the most advanced cave dives in the world.
The Mayans regarded the cenotes as sacred, the entrance to the underworld, Xibalba. Some cave divers have found numerous skulls in the water near some cenote entrances, proving that these were once used for sacrificial purposes.
But the Mayans were not the only people to have wandered the area in the past. During the last ice age, the caves in Mexico were dry. They were home to hundreds of animals including early humans. Numerous prehistoric skeletons have been found in the area, including the oldest in the Americas.

I had a great experience with the entire team at BlueLife. I did 4 reef dives (2 at Playa and 2 at Cozumel) with Valentina, 2 cenote dives with Hugo, and also did the whale shark snorkeling up in Isla Mujeres. Everyone was very professional, prepared, thorough, and communicated very clearly about all aspects of the activities. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking for a great experience from beginning to end!
